Nalbandian Gives Argentina First Win on Russian Soil
David Nalbandian recorded his 20th Davis Cup win in 24 singles rubbers to give two-time finalist Argentina a 3-2 win over Russia at the Olympic Stadium in Moscow. It ended Russia's 17-tie winning streak at home.
Nalbandian, who has overcome a series of injuries since helping Argentina to the 2008 final, defeated Mikhail Youzhny of Russia 7-6(5), 6-4, 6-3 in two hours and 26 minutes. He improved to an 11-3 match record on the season.
"I played great, much better than Friday," said Nalbandian. "I said I had to keep improving my game, and that is what I did today. We won so I'm so happy to be in the semi-finals again."
Earlier on Sunday, Russian Nikolay Davydenko ensured the tie went to a decisive five rubber after he hit 15 aces and 37 winners past World No. 6 defeated Eduardo Schwank for a 4-6, 6-3, 6-1, 6-4 victory in two hours and 43 minutes.
Nalbandian, currently No. 153 in the South African Airways 2010 ATP Rankings, also helped Argentina to a 3-2 away-win over Sweden in the first round. Argentina meets France in the semi-finals in September.
